Objectives

  1. Strengthen reproductive system and menstrual health vocabulary.
  2. Practice reading, writing, and speaking aloud words that could be taboo, unfamiliar, or uncomfortable.

To Play REPRO BINGO

  1. First, create the 50 Word Cards with reproductive health vocabulary. Each card should include the B, I, N, G, or O letter and the vocabulary word, such as:
    • B – genetales
    • G – fertilizacion
    • I – pubertad

Store the cards in a box or envelope. Make sure you have all 50 words and their corresponding B-I-N-G-O letters.

  2. Give each participant a Play Card to complete for themselves:
    1. Write one word from the list into each square. Make sure each word is under the same letter column in which it appears above: B, I, N, G, or O.
    2. Fill in every square with a vocabulary word except for the FREE square under N.
    3. When everyone has their Play Card filled in correctly, you can play BINGO!
  3. To mark the squares, cut tiny 1/2-inch squares out of construction paper or cardboard from a cereal box. Plan on 25 small markers per person. Seeds, beans, or clean pebbles can also be used as markers.
  4. To win at BINGO, a player must cover a series of five squares with their words on the Play Card to form a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line across the whole grid. The center N is a FREE square with a marker.
  5. Choose a Word Card from the envelope. Announce the letter and the word, such as: “B – herpes.” Show the card to the class and repeat the word. You could select someone to:
    1. Use the word in a sentence.
    2. Define or locate it on a graphic.
    3. Translate the word into another language.
  6. Whoever has the announced word on their Play Card puts a marker over that word. Before selecting and announcing another word, make sure everyone has marked the correct word if it is on their card.
  7. Continue pulling cards and announcing the letter plus the vocabulary word.
  8. When someone’s markers form a complete line on their card, the person yells: “BINGO!” They then read aloud the words that form the winning line. If two or more people get BINGO at the same time, each person must read the words on their winning line.
  9. These are the first BINGO winners, and they win some type of prize, such as candy, a pen, stickers, a coupon, etc. Please note: After there is a win, tell everyone to keep their cards as they are. Explain that there are several prizes and that the game will continue. Continue announcing words and awarding BINGO winners until the prizes run out. Players can only win one time or receive one prize.
  10. Encourage people to help each other mark the announced words. This gives some participants additional attention while helping others strengthen their knowledge.
  11. BINGO is enjoyable and educational. Reading and announcing reproductive and menstrual system words aloud reduces the sting of taboo and the fear of censorship. Using scientific words reduces their vulgarity, sexual charge, and scariness. This game is excellent for classes and community activities with parents and couples. More fun comes with practical or interesting prizes and refreshments!
